SBI Life Gets Big Tax Relief; Demand Cut from ₹5,317 Crore to ₹470 Crore
Mumbai, March 4, 2026: SBI Life Insurance Company Limited has received a significant relief in its income tax matter after the tax authorities substantially reduced the earlier demand of over ₹5,317 crore to ₹470.88 crore.
The company informed stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of SEBI Listing Regulations that it received a rectification order under Section 154 read with Section 143(3) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 from the Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, Circle 1(3)1, Mumbai, at 3:53 PM on March 4, 2026.
Tax Demand Slashed from ₹5,317 Crore to ₹470.88 Crore
Earlier, in its disclosure dated March 30, 2024, SBI Life had reported the following tax demand for FY 2021-22:
-
Tax: ₹4,286.63 crore
-
Interest: ₹1,030.55 crore
-
Penalty: Nil
-
Total: ₹5,317.18 crore
Following the rectification application filed by the company citing incorrect computation of tax and interest, the revised demand now stands at:
-
Tax: ₹315.84 crore
-
Interest: ₹155.04 crore
-
Penalty: Nil
-
Total: ₹470.88 crore
This marks a reduction of over ₹4,846 crore from the original demand.
Appeal Already Filed
SBI Life clarified that it had already filed an appeal before the Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeals) within the stipulated timeline against the original assessment order. The company will now submit the rectification order before the appellate authority.
Importantly, the grounds of appeal filed earlier will remain in force despite the revised demand.
No Penalty Imposed
The company confirmed that no penalty has been levied under the rectification order.
What This Means for Investors
The sharp reduction in tax demand significantly lowers the potential financial exposure for SBI Life. While the appellate process is ongoing, the rectification order materially reduces uncertainty compared to the earlier disclosed liability exceeding ₹5,000 crore.
The development is likely to be closely tracked by investors given the scale of the earlier demand and its potential impact on profitability and capital position.
