Key Focus Areas of the Partnership

The dialogue underscored a shared commitment to building resilient and responsible supply chains. Coal India conveyed specific interests in:

  • Critical Mineral Assets: Securing resources such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements essential for India’s semiconductor and electric vehicle (EV) sectors.

  • Coking Coal: Pursuing partnerships to ensure a steady supply of coking coal, a vital component for India’s expanding steel industry.

  • Mineral Processing: Collaborating on technical exchanges and the development of the mineral processing sector to enhance value-addition within the supply chain.

  • ESG & Sustainability: Leveraging Canadian expertise in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks and adoption of advanced technologies for environmentally responsible extraction.

Deepening Industry-Level Engagement

Both leaders agreed to foster deeper engagement at the industry level, which will be facilitated by Government-to-Government (G2G) support. This framework is intended to translate high-level discussions into concrete, mutually beneficial commercial agreements.

The meeting took place as part of a broader revitalisation of India-Canada relations, which also saw the signing of a $2.6 billion uranium supply deal and the relaunch of the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue.

"Coal India is pursuing a 360-degree reform agenda," stated Chairman B. Sairam. "Our intent is to diversify beyond thermal coal, aligning with the national strategy to secure critical mineral supply chains while leading in sustainable mining."

This collaboration marks a significant step for Coal India as it designates 2026 its "Year of Reform and Transformation," positioning the state-run miner as a diversified global energy player.
