Power Ministry to Form Panel to Identify NTPC’s Next CMD
New Delhi: The Ministry of Power has announced that it will form a Search‑cum‑Selection Committee to identify the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, India’s largest power producer. This step comes after the government’s usual recruitment board, the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB), could not find a suitable candidate for the post.
The current CMD, Gurdeep Singh, was originally scheduled to retire on July 31, 2025, but his tenure has been extended until August 1, 2026 to ensure continuity in leadership while the new CMD is appointed.
Application and Selection Process
The Power Ministry has invited eligible candidates to apply for the position by March 28, 2026. The Search‑cum‑Selection Committee is a process used when PESB is unable to identify a suitable candidate, allowing a more direct and focused evaluation of applicants.
Since 2021, several other major public sector companies, including ONGC, Indian Oil Corporation, HPCL, and BPCL, have also relied on similar committees to fill top leadership positions. Interestingly, Gurdeep Singh himself was appointed CMD of NTPC in 2016 through the same type of selection panel, proving the method’s effectiveness.
Significance for NTPC and the Energy Sector
NTPC Limited plays a vital role in India’s power sector, with ongoing projects in thermal, hydro, and renewable energy. The appointment of a new CMD is critical to steering the company through expansion plans, enhancing efficiency, and supporting India’s energy transition goals. The selected leader will guide NTPC’s strategy to meet the growing electricity demand while investing in sustainable and clean energy initiatives.
