Trump Says US Must Control Greenland to Counter Russia and China Security Threats

US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States needs to take ownership of Greenland in order to protect its national security and prevent Russia and China from gaining strategic advantage in the Arctic region.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Trump argued that long term security cannot be guaranteed through temporary agreements or leases and insisted that true protection comes only through ownership. He warned that global powers such as Russia and China are expanding their presence in the Arctic and that the United States cannot allow them to become its neighbours in Greenland.

Greenland occupies a critical strategic location between North America and the Arctic Ocean. Despite being one of the world’s most sparsely populated territories, it plays a major role in missile early warning systems and monitoring naval movements in the region.

The United States already maintains a permanent military presence at Pituffik Space Base in north western Greenland, a facility that has operated under American control since the Second World War. Current defence agreements with Denmark allow Washington to deploy additional forces if required.

However Trump made clear that he believes such arrangements are insufficient, stating that national security demands permanent control rather than long term contracts. He added that the US would pursue its interests firmly and decisively.

Denmark and Greenland have rejected any suggestion of selling the territory and warned that the use of military force would threaten the foundations of the trans Atlantic alliance. Several Nato countries including Canada and major European states have publicly reaffirmed that only Denmark and Greenland can determine the territory’s future.

These allies also emphasised that Arctic security should be addressed collectively within Nato while respecting international law, sovereignty and the inviolability of borders as outlined in the United Nations Charter.

The comments have intensified global debate over Arctic geopolitics as competition between major powers continues to grow in the resource rich and strategically vital polar region.
