India Achieves 1 Billion Tonne Coal Production Milestone
New Delhi: India achieved a historic milestone by producing one billion tonnes of coal in the last financial year, marking a significant step towards energy security. Coal production and supply have shown consistent growth over recent years, supported by reforms implemented over the past decade.
According to the government, domestic coal reserves are adequate to meet the country’s needs for the next seven years, ensuring stable supply for key industries. These developments have been driven by policy reforms and infrastructure improvements under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
Building on this progress, the government is placing increased emphasis on coal gasification, a technology-driven approach aimed at cleaner and more efficient use of coal. Coal gasification is expected to help reduce India’s dependence on imports by substituting imported fuels and raw materials such as crude oil, ammonia, coking coal, aviation fuel, and urea.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader objective of enhancing self-reliance, lowering import bills, and adopting advanced technologies for sustainable energy utilisation.
