What is CASA-1000?

CASA-1000, short for Central Asia-South Asia power project, is a multi-billion-dollar initiative that will enable Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to export their surplus hydroelectric energy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The project, which broke ground in May 2016, is expected to be fully operational by 2025.

During the summer months, when hydroelectric dams in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan produce excess electricity, the project will facilitate the export of up to 1,300 megawatts of energy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
