A subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. The main objective of the memorandum is to sustain the green energy technologies in VOC Port while especially focusing on the green hydrogen mobility scheme.

The agreement was exchanged between Shri Kishore Kumar Hota, CGM, NTPC, and Shri A. Ganesan, CME, VOCPA, in the august presence of Hon’ble Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal; Hon’ble Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment of the Govt. of Tamil Nadu Smt. Geeta Jeevan; Hon’ble Member of the Legislative Assembly Shri Nainar Nagendran; Shri T. K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways; Shri Susanta Kumar Purohit, IRSEE, Chairman, VOCPA; and senior officials from the Govt. of Tamil Nadu, NTPC, and VOCPA.

The NTPC’s subsidiary will set up a green hydrogen fuelling station in VOC Port along with hydrogen-based internal combustion engine trucks for the VOC port operation.

This will be expected to phase out the fossil fuel trucks in favor of clean and green fuels, bringing decarbonization and energy security. Meanwhile, the NTPC, the parent company, has been successfully operating the green hydrogen blending project at Surat, Gujarat, for over two years and has already taken similar mobility initiatives at Leh, Ladakh; Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh; Bhubaneshwar, Odisha; and Kandla Port, Gujarat.

NGEL is also developing the green hydrogen hub in Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and aims to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 with energy storage solutions.
