MIDHANI Awarded Certificate for Indigenization of Alloys for AL31FP Engine
Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has been awarded a certificate by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) for successful indigenization and airworthiness certification of Superalloys, Titanium alloys, and Special steels for the AL31FP engine powering the SU-30MKI aircraft.
Hyderabad, 27 October 2025: Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has been awarded a certificate by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) for successful indigenization and airworthiness certification of Superalloys, Titanium alloys, and Special steels for the AL31FP engine powering the SU-30MKI aircraft.
Under an order from HAL Koraput in 2024, MIDHANI undertook the challenging task of indigenous development and certification of various critical alloys used in the AL31FP engine. Within a short span, the company achieved material-level development for 50% of the total alloy systems, out of which 80% have already been certified. The remaining alloys are at advanced stages of development.
The certificate handed over by CEMILAC grants clearance for series production of these alloys, making them suitable for manufacturing airworthy components of the AL31FP engine. MIDHANI showcased the successfully developed and produced mill forms and forgings of various Superalloys such as Supercast BZL1, BZL14H, ZS 6Y, Superni 648, Superni 698; Titanium alloys such as OT 4-1 and Titan 33A; and Special steels such as AE 866W and 16XH3BFMB-W — all of which are used in safety-critical and mission-critical aero engine components.
In the past year, MIDHANI has significantly enhanced its production capabilities by commissioning a new Titanium Shop to boost airworthy titanium alloy production, installing a 6000T near-isothermal forge press, upgrading Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) furnaces to support large-scale remelt stock manufacturing, and producing master heats of single-crystal superalloys.
While presenting the certificate, Shri A.P.V.S. Prasad, Chief Executive, CEMILAC, appreciated MIDHANI’s continued efforts and encouraged the organization to pursue indigenization and certification on a fast-track mode to meet the timelines of accelerated material testing of engines — ensuring the continued operational readiness of the SU-30 fleet with indigenous materials.
The event was attended by Dr. S.V.S. Narayana Murty, Chairman and Managing Director, MIDHANI; Shri A.P.V.S. Prasad, Chief Executive, CEMILAC; Smt. K. Madhubala, Director (Finance), MIDHANI; along with senior officials from MIDHANI and CEMILAC.
