New Delhi/Shimla, Jan 15, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated SJVN Green Energy Ltd’s 70-MW Dhubri Solar Power Project, marking the state’s first large-scale solar installation and SJVN’s first operational project in the North-Eastern region.
The event was attended by Assam Power Minister Prasanta Phukan, SJVN Chairman and Managing Director Bhupendra Gupta, senior officials from the Assam government and the company’s leadership.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gupta said the commissioning of the project strengthens SJVN’s renewable portfolio and supports India’s broader goals of energy security and sustainability. He credited the central and state governments for their continued support in advancing clean energy development in the region.
SJVN Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma said the project will generate substantial direct and indirect employment for local communities and significantly enhance Assam’s clean power capacity.
Project details
The solar plant has been developed by SJVN Green Energy Ltd on 330 acres of land leased from Assam Power Distribution Company Ltd (APDCL) for 28 years in Dhubri district. The project was awarded to SJVN in February 2023 through a tariff-based competitive bidding process at a tariff of ₹3.92 per unit.
The EPC cost of the project stands at ₹367.44 crore.
The facility is expected to generate 141 million units of electricity in its first year with a capacity utilisation factor of 23%, and about 3,230 million units over its 25-year operational life. The plant is projected to reduce carbon emissions by around 158,000 tonnes.
The foundation stone of the project was laid virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024.
