CMPDI Secures Ministry of Coal Approval for Vedanta’s Ghogharpalli Coal Block
This approval, granted under Rule 22B of the Mineral Concession Rules (MCR) 1960, paves the way for large-scale coal extraction in the region.

Bhubaneswar, March 17, 2025 – The Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI), Regional Institute-VII (RI-VII), has successfully obtained approval from the Ministry of Coal (MoC) for the Mine Plan and Mine Closure Plan of the Ghogharpalli and its Dip Extension Coal Block, located in the Ib Valley Coalfield. This approval, granted under Rule 22B of the Mineral Concession Rules (MCR) 1960, paves the way for large-scale coal extraction in the region.

The project, with an annual production capacity of 20 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), is designed as a 30-year open-cast mining operation. Over its lifespan, it is expected to extract approximately 554.26 million tonnes of coal while managing 1,616.89 million cubic meters of overburden. The mine plan incorporates advanced pit and dump scheduling, along with strategic provisions for transitioning to underground (UG) and highwall (HW) mining in the future, ensuring optimal resource utilization and long-term sustainability.
