The first offshore wind projects in India are scheduled to be developed along the Tamil Nadu coast

New Delhi: On September 28th, the Indian government took a significant step by initiating its inaugural tender process for the allocation of seabed sites along the Tamil Nadu coastline, specifically for the development of offshore wind projects. This milestone is noteworthy as India currently lacks any offshore wind ventures, relying solely on onshore wind farms with a combined capacity of 44,089.68 MW.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) will be responsible for overseeing the allocation of these seabed sites through auctions and will provide exemptions from inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges to developers or generators who complete their offshore wind projects by December 31, 2032. Senior MNRE officials anticipate that due to the time required for studies and project development, the first operational offshore wind project is unlikely to materialize before 2030.
