NHPC Achieves Major Milestone at 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Project with Record 673 MT Rotor Installation

NHPC successfully lowers India’s heaviest hydro generator rotor (673 MT) at Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking major progress toward commissioning 1250 MW capacity.
NHPC Achieves Major Milestone at 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Project with Record 673 MT Rotor Installation

In a significant milestone toward the completion of the NHPC Limited’s 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the Generator Rotor of Unit #5, weighing an unprecedented 673 metric tonnes, was successfully lowered into the generator pit on 01 March 2026 at 11:00 hrs.

This marks the heaviest equipment ever handled in a hydro power plant in India, representing a landmark achievement in the country’s renewable energy infrastructure development.

The highly complex operation was carried out with meticulous planning, precision engineering, and seamless coordination among all stakeholders. The activity forms a critical part of the electro-mechanical erection works and significantly advances the project toward commissioning.

The rotor installation will now enable boxing-up activities of Unit #5, expediting the subsequent testing and commissioning phases.

Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director & Head of the Subansiri Lower Project, congratulated the entire project team and the executing agency GE Vernova for achieving this engineering milestone.

With this development, the project moves closer to commissioning five units aggregating 1250 MW out of the total eight units (8 × 250 MW), progressing steadily toward full operationalization of the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, one of India’s most significant hydropower ventures.

The milestone reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening renewable energy capacity and enhancing long-term energy security.
