NHPC Powers India Forward: Third 250 MW Unit of 2000 MW Subansiri Project Goes Live
New Delhi, March 20, 2026: NHPC Limited, a leading hydropower developer under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has declared the commercial operation of the third unit (Unit #1, 250 MW) of its 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. The project is located across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
The unit commenced commercial operation at 00:00 hours on March 20, 2026, contributing an additional 250 MW of clean hydropower to the National Grid.
Operational Milestone
With this commissioning, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has achieved a total operational capacity of 750 MW out of its planned 2000 MW. The project plays a key role in:

Prior to commercial operation, the trial run of the unit was successfully completed on February 27, 2026, marking a major milestone in the project’s overall progress.

On this occasion, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their support. He commended the Subansiri Lower Project team led by Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, and acknowledged the contributions of various departments at NHPC’s Corporate Office.
He added that the successful commissioning reflects NHPC’s technical expertise and execution capability, reinforcing its pivotal role in enhancing national energy resilience in line with the Government of India’s vision of a sustainable and self-reliant power sector.
Shri Gupta also expressed confidence that this achievement will facilitate the timely commissioning of the remaining units of the project.
