Sushma Rawat retires after 35 years of redefining ONGC’s exploration legacy

ONGC celebrates the extraordinary journey of Sushma Rawat, Director (Exploration), as she marks her superannuation, a moment that signifies the culmination of a legacy written in rock, rig, and relentless resolve.

From the rugged fields of the Cauvery Basin to the commanding heights of ONGC’s exploration leadership, Miss Rawat carved a path not just through geoscientific challenges but also through glass ceilings. A postgraduate in Petroleum Geology, she joined ONGC in 1989, stepping into a space few women had ventured, and went on to redefine the landscape of exploration in India.

Her three-decade-long odyssey is etched with discovery, innovation, and inspiration. From leading basin analysis in KG, Mumbai Offshore, and Assam-Arakan basins to shaping ONGC’s frontier exploration strategies, she was never just a geologist; she was a force of quiet transformation. Under her leadership, the Assam & A&AA Basin scaled new heights, and her command of geosciences earned her a reputation as a mentor, strategist, and institution builder.

With every seismic line interpreted, every basin decoded, and every mind mentored, Miss Rawat has left an imprint that transcends her designation. She leaves not just a department, but a legacy for generations of explorers to come.
