In a significant boost to strengthen Make in India initiative of steel cutting edge technology, the PSU Steel maker and supplier SAIL is fostering the strategic steel infrastructure of the nation, contributing towards major public sector carriers.

SAIL Steel is reinforcing the backbone of strategic infrastructure of nation with high-grade warship-quality steel, superior strength and corrosion resistance and indigenous manufacturing under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

The company records over turnover of Rs 1 lakh crore and has produced around 18.733 million tonnes of hot metal and 17.366 million tonnes of crude steel during 2021-22 financial year.

INS Nilgiri is advanced ship of the Nilgiri-class frigates as a part of Project 17A, built for the Indian Navy. The ship is stealth frigate designed for blue-water operations, enhancing India's naval capabilities in anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine warfare. The ship is 149 meters long, with a displacement of approximately 6,670 tonnes and a speed of 28 knots. 

Meanwhile, the largest steel making PSU has also supplied the entire requirement of special steel for India’s first indigenously designed and built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), ‘INS Arnala’, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy June 18, 2025.

SAIL has also catered to the entire requirement of special steel for the other seven ASW-SWC corvettes being built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).

The largest steelmaking Public Sector Undertaking, has taken a step forward towards the country's self-reliance in the defence sector and import substitution.

In a major boost, the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has supplied 16,000 tonnes of steel for the construction of the world's tallest railway bridge over the Chenab river in Jammu & Kashmir, of which the Bhilai Steel Plant contributed 12,000 tonnes. It includes plates, TMT bars, and structural steel
