SECL Organizes One-Day Workshop on Maintenance

A one-day workshop on *safe installation and maintenance of Electrical & Mechanical equipment and Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM)* was successfully organized at the Headquarters of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Bilaspur, on 20 November 2025, under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS).

New Delhi: A one-day workshop on *safe installation and maintenance of Electrical & Mechanical equipment and Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM)* was successfully organized at the Headquarters of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), Bilaspur, on 20 November 2025, under the aegis of the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS).

 

The workshop was formally inaugurated with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Chief Guest *Mr. Harish Duhan, CMD, SECL, Distinguished Guests — **Mr. N. Franklin Jayakumar, Director (Technical) – Operations; **Mr. Ramesh Chandra Mohapatra, Director (Technical) – Project & Planning; DGMS officials from the Western Zone, Nagpur — **Mr. T. Srinivas, DMS (Electrical); **Mr. P.K. Jain, DMS (Mechanical); **Mr. Gaurav Ladha, DDMS (Electrical); and esteemed members of the Safety Committee — **Mr. B. Dharmarao (AITUC), **Mr. I.D. Chauhan (CITU), and **Mr. G.S. Prasad (CMOAI)*.

In his address, *Mr. Harish Duhan, CMD, SECL, stated that the company is continuously strengthening both safety and operational efficiency through **technological interventions. He emphasized SECL’s commitment to replacing manual processes with **mechanized systems* wherever feasible. Stressing the importance of keeping equipment updated, he highlighted the need for timely replacement and adoption of new technologies to ensure *the highest levels of workplace safety*.

Director (Technical) – Operations, *Mr. N. Franklin Jayakumar, underlined the significance of such workshops in driving **practical improvements in safety standards* across mines and workshops.

Director (Technical) – Project & Planning, *Mr. Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra, reiterated SECL’s goal of achieving **Zero Harm. He urged all participants to ensure the safety of every workplace, every piece of equipment, and every worker. He also emphasized adherence to the *‘Take-5 Rule’**, describing it as a fundamental pillar of safety culture.

The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from nearly *300 attendees*, including staff officers, engineers, supervisors, foremen, workmen inspectors and technical personnel from SECL Headquarters and operational areas across electrical, mechanical and excavation departments.

Three technical sessions were conducted by DGMS officials.

* *Mr. T. Srinivas (DMS–Electrical)* delivered a detailed presentation on critical subjects such as fault current, earthing systems, and grading–coordination.
* *Mr. Gaurav Ladha (DDMS–Electrical)* provided insights on current grade systems, current transformers, and related technical terminology.
* *Mr. P.K. Jain (DMS–Mechanical)* guided participants on responsibilities of engineers and competent persons, maintenance of logbooks and statutory records, compliance with SOP/SMP/JSA, and key aspects of accident prevention.

The programme commenced with a welcome address by *Mr. Prakash Rai, General Manager (Safety & Rescue)*, who highlighted SECL’s unwavering commitment to safety and the importance of collective participation.

During the workshop, *Mr. Deepak Kumar, General Manager (Excavation), presented operational and safety aspects related to HEMM. OEM representatives from **L&T and Komatsu* also briefed participants on the modern safety features available in their machines.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by *Mr. Srikant Das, General Manager (E&M)*, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, DGMS officials, and participants.

The programme was conducted smoothly by *Mr. Sheikh Zakir Husain, Chief Manager (Environment), and **Mrs. Mitali Tiwari, Senior Manager (E&M)*.
