Jammu & Kashmir:  A group of Trainee IAS Officers from the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) visited NHPC’s Salal Power Station in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir on Tuesday as part of their field tour aimed at understanding the functioning of major hydropower projects in India.

The officers were accorded a warm welcome by the NHPC management and technical team, who conducted a comprehensive briefing on the plant’s operations and strategic role in the national power sector.

During the interaction, officials explained key aspects of the project including dam operations, power generation mechanisms, grid stability, dam safety measures, safety protocols, and the critical role of hydropower in ensuring grid reliability and sustainable energy supply.

The visiting officers were given a detailed overview of the Salal Hydroelectric Project’s contribution to regional development, national energy security and its importance in India’s transition towards clean and renewable energy sources.

The tour provided the trainees with valuable exposure to large-scale infrastructure management, challenges of hydropower development, and the strategic importance of clean hydro energy in strengthening India’s power sector while reducing carbon emissions.

NHPC officials emphasized that hydropower continues to be a backbone of India’s renewable energy mix, supporting peak load demand, stabilizing the grid and contributing significantly to the country’s climate commitments.

The visit concluded with an interactive session where the officers discussed policy perspectives, sustainable development goals and the future of renewable energy in India.
