RBI Updates Status on Withdrawal of ₹2000 Banknotes – Over 98% Returned
RBI reports that 98.39% of ₹2000 banknotes have been returned since withdrawal announcement in May 2023. Notes remain legal tender; exchange available at 19 RBI offices.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has provided an update on the withdrawal of ₹2000 denomination banknotes from circulation, initially announced on May 19, 2023. As of November 29, 2025, the total value of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation has declined to ₹5,743 crore, indicating that 98.39% of the notes issued as of May 19, 2023, have been returned.
While the facility to deposit or exchange ₹2000 notes at bank branches was available until October 7, 2023, individuals and entities can still exchange or deposit these notes at the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country. Additionally, the public can send ₹2000 notes via India Post to any RBI Issue Office for credit to their bank accounts.
Despite the withdrawal process, ₹2000 banknotes continue to be legal tender. The RBI periodically publishes the status of returned notes, with the previous update issued on November 1, 2025.
