JSW Energy ties up with Toshiba JSW for 1,600 MW turbine supply at Salboni plant

Mumbai: JSW Energy Ltd on Thursday said its wholly owned subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Ltd, has entered into a major supply contract with associate company Toshiba JSW Power Systems Pvt Ltd for procurement of two 800 MW steam turbine generators for its upcoming 1,600 MW thermal power project at Salboni in West Bengal.

The agreement marks a critical milestone for the Salboni project, which is currently under construction and is expected to significantly boost JSW Energy’s thermal generation portfolio. The turbine-generator package will be manufactured and delivered in alignment with the project’s execution schedule, helping ensure timely commissioning of the plant.

Company officials said the decision to source key equipment from an associate company was aimed at strengthening supply-chain reliability, improving coordination during construction and mitigating risks arising from global shortages of heavy power equipment.

“The turbine generator supply contract with Toshiba JSW is a strategic step in strengthening execution certainty for our Salboni project,” said Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy. “Thermal power will continue to play a vital role in maintaining grid stability as India accelerates its renewable energy expansion.”

With the Salboni project, JSW Energy’s operational thermal capacity of 5,658 MW is set to expand further. Once the 1,600 MW plant is commissioned and the company exercises its option to add another 1,800 MW at KSK Mahanadi, total thermal capacity will rise to about 9,058 MW — representing roughly 30% of its total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW.

JSW Energy currently has 13.3 GW of operational capacity, with an additional 12.4 GW under construction across thermal and renewable segments. The company also holds 29.4 GWh of energy storage capacity through hydro pumped storage projects and battery energy storage systems. It aims to achieve 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by FY2030, while targeting carbon neutrality by 2050.

The Salboni plant is positioned as a key contributor to India’s power infrastructure, providing reliable baseload capacity at a time when the country is rapidly scaling up renewable energy. Industry experts say the project will strengthen eastern India’s power grid and support the government’s broader objective of adding nearly 100 GW of new thermal capacity over the coming years.

Shares of JSW Energy were trading steady on the BSE following the announcement.
