In the remote villages and tribal hamlets of Singrauli, where childhood was once overshadowed by poverty, limited resources, and lack of educational opportunities, a quiet transformation is taking place. The Singrauli based Coal India arm Northern Coalfields Limited is bringing a quiet transformation through its “Seva Kutir” CSR initiative. The initiative is giving hundreds of children a new ray of hope through education.

Through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, NCL, in association with the Parivar Education Society, is writing inspiring stories of change across 25 villages of Singrauli. Under the “Seva Kutir” program, local children are being provided supplementary education and nutritious meals twice a day, creating an environment where learning and growth go hand in hand.

More than just academic support, the centres focus on the holistic development of children. Activities such as sports, yoga, storytelling, painting, handicrafts, moral education, and creative learning are integrated into daily routines, helping children build confidence, discipline, communication skills, and curiosity.

At present, over 2,000 children are benefiting from these centres. Each child undergoes a foundational assessment to understand their learning abilities, ensuring that education is delivered according to their individual pace and understanding. This personalized approach has helped many first-generation learners overcome hesitation and develop a genuine interest in education.

One of the key objectives of “Seva Kutir” is to prepare children for admission into prestigious residential government schools such as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Eklavya Model Residential School, and Kanya Shiksha Parisar. These institutions provide quality education up to Class 12 and open doors to brighter futures for children from underprivileged backgrounds.

In December last year, 89 students from Seva Kutir centres appeared for the Navodaya Vidyalaya entrance examination. Teachers at the centres guided them through every step, from filling out forms to exam preparation. Similarly, applications for 131 children were submitted for admission to Eklavya schools.

Among the many success stories emerging from Seva Kutir are those of Sunita Devi from Jamthiva Kutir, Vikas Baiga from Harijan Basti, and Neelam Devi from Sinduriya Tola. Once struggling with lack of confidence, limited exposure, and difficult social circumstances, these children had little opportunity to dream beyond their immediate realities. Some spent their days helping with household chores or grazing cattle, while others had almost lost interest in studies altogether.

However, after joining Seva Kutir, their lives gradually began to change. Regular learning, constant encouragement from teachers, a disciplined environment, and emotional support helped them rediscover their confidence and aspirations.

Today, all three children have successfully cleared the entrance examination for the prestigious Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS), proving that with the right opportunities, compassionate guidance, and continuous support, every child has the potential to achieve great success.

NCL’s “Seva Kutir” is not merely an education initiative; it is a movement that is nurturing dreams, building self-belief, and empowering children in remote communities to imagine a better future for themselves.
