New Delhi: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has released the August-December 2025 edition of its award-winning in-house journal, SAILNews, detailing a period marked by high-profile government engagements, robust financial growth, and significant strides in defence manufacturing. The Maharatna PSU reinforced its position as the "Steel Backbone of India" by posting a 32% growth in Profit After Tax (PAT) and securing major technological milestones.
The latest issue covers a transformative phase for the public sector giant, highlighted by the visit of the Hon’ble Union Minister of Steel, Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy, and the company’s unwavering commitment to the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) mission through indigenous steel production for the armed forces.
Ministerial Visits and Strategic Roadmaps
A major highlight of the period was the two-day visit of Union Steel Minister Shri H. D. Kumaraswamy to the SAIL-Rourkela Steel Plant (SAIL-RSP) on November 18, 2025. The Minister inaugurated the state-of-the-art Caster #4 at the Steel Melting Shop-2, a project set to enhance the plant's efficiency and production capabilities. He was joined by the Hon’ble Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, Shri Jual Oram, and Shri Amarendu Prakash, CMD, SAIL.
"The Government of India... is committed to providing all necessary support for the growth and development of Rourkela Steel Plant," Shri Kumaraswamy stated during his visit.
Shortly after, on November 20, 2025, the Union Steel Minister inaugurated the “Chintan Shivir - 2025” in Bhubaneswar. The two-day brainstorming session brought together ministry officials, CPSEs like SAIL, NMDC, and MOIL, and private sector leaders from Tata Steel and JSW to chart a strategic roadmap for the Indian steel sector. Discussions centered on technology adoption, operational excellence, and indigenous manufacturing.
In parallel, the Steel Secretary, Shri Sandeep Poundrik, conducted a detailed review of operations at SAIL’s Bokaro Steel Plant (SAIL-BSL) in October, while CMD, SAIL, Shri Amarendu Prakash, undertook strategic visits to Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) and IISCO Steel Plant (ISP) in November to review modernization roadmaps and engage with the workforce.
Financial Fortitude: 32% PAT Growth Amid Global Headwinds
Despite global volatility, SAIL delivered a stellar financial performance in the first half of FY'26. Announced on October 29, 2025, the company’s Profit After Tax (PAT) soared by ~32% to ₹1,112 crore. Revenue from operations crossed ₹52,600 crore, driven by a robust 16.7% jump in sales volume.
This momentum continued into the second half, with SAIL recording a 27% growth in sales in November 2025. Retail sales surged by an impressive 69%, solidifying its position as the highest seller of TMT bars in the country. For the April-November 2025 period, cumulative sales reached 12.7 MT, a 14% year-on-year growth.
"The Company has maintained high capacity utilisation for a steady production... With steely resolve and collective team efforts, we have achieved a significant increase in sales volume," said Shri Amarendu Prakash, CMD, SAIL, commenting on the results.
Cover Story: The Steel Backbone of Indian Defence
The newsletter's cover story, "SAIL: The Steel Backbone of India," shines a spotlight on the company’s pivotal role in strengthening national security through import substitution. SAIL’s plants—including Rourkela (RSP), Bhilai (BSP), Bokaro (BSL), and the Alloy Steels Plant (ASP), Durgapur—are at the forefront of supplying defence-grade steel.
Key contributions highlighted include:
-
INS Vikrant: SAIL supplied the entire 30,000 tonnes of specialty DMR grade plates for India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier.
-
Project 17A Frigates: 100% of the special-grade steel for warships like INS Nilgiri and INS Vindhyagiri was supplied by SAIL.
-
Armoured Vehicles: Supply of high-strength steel for the Dhanush artillery gun and armored plates for combat vehicles like the Arjun Tank.
-
Missile Programme: SAIL-RSP supplied 15CDV6 grade plates for the Agni Missile.
"Behind every plate of defense-grade steel... is the tireless spirit of SAIL employees... transforming from steelmakers into strategic guardians," remarked Shri K. K. Singh, Director (Personnel), SAIL.
Awards, Innovations, and Sustainability
SAIL’s commitment to excellence was further validated by a host of national awards. The company received the prestigious SCOPE Eminence Award for R&D, Technology Development & Innovation for 2022–23 from the Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. Additionally, SAIL's corporate communication strategies were recognized with eight national awards by the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI).
In a significant technological breakthrough, the New Plate Mill at SAIL-RSP implemented an innovative emissivity coating in its reheating furnace, targeting a 5% reduction in Specific Heat Consumption, leading to both cost savings and lower emissions.
On the sustainability front, SAIL and NTPC commissioned a 15 MW Floating Solar Project at the Maroda-1 Reservoir of the Bhilai Steel Plant, the first-of-its-kind in Chhattisgarh, which will generate ~34.25 Million Units of clean electricity annually and reduce CO₂ emissions by 28,400 tons.
The CSR initiatives also gained momentum, with SAIL-RSP signing an MoU with NIT Rourkela for a "Waste to Wealth" organic farming project to empower 600 women farmers, and SAIL-BSL launching free coaching for 300 youths from displaced and peripheral areas.
From strategic ministerial visits and robust financial health to its critical role in national defence and sustainable practices, the SAILNews August-December 2025 edition paints a picture of a resilient and forward-looking organization, deeply entrenched in India's journey towards becoming a global economic powerhouse.
