Chicago, February 4, 2026 — The State of Illinois has announced its participation in the World Health Organization’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), aiming to bolster public health defenses against emerging disease threats. Governor J.B. Pritzker confirmed the move, emphasizing the state’s commitment to protecting residents despite the federal withdrawal from the WHO earlier this year.

GOARN brings together hundreds of public health institutions, laboratories, and government agencies worldwide to provide early warning alerts, real-time outbreak information, and expert guidance. By joining the network, Illinois gains direct access to these global resources, improving its ability to detect and respond to health emergencies.

Governor Pritzker stated, “Infectious diseases do not respect borders. Joining this network ensures Illinois has the tools and partnerships to safeguard the health of our communities.”

The state already maintains advanced public health capabilities, including genomic sequencing and wastewater surveillance, which will now be integrated with GOARN resources to enhance early detection and response. Health officials noted that global cooperation is crucial for disease forecasting, vaccine planning, and outbreak mitigation.

Illinois becomes the second U.S. state to join the WHO outbreak network, signaling a growing trend of state-level leadership in global health preparedness. Officials say such partnerships will help protect families and communities while strengthening public health infrastructure for the future.
