India Pushes Trade Ties in Latin America: Progress in Negotiations with Peru and Chile
New Delhi/Lima/Santiago: India has made significant progress in its effort to strengthen economic ties with Latin America. The country successfully concluded two important rounds of trade talks with Peru and Chile in a short period. These developments highlight the Indian Government's dedication to expanding trade links and economic cooperation in the region.
Momentum Builds in India-Peru Trade Agreement Talks
The 9th Round of India-Peru Trade Agreement negotiations wrapped up in Lima, Peru, from November 3rd to 5th, 2025. This round marked substantial progress in several areas. Negotiators addressed complex topics such as Trade in Goods and Services, Rules of Origin, Customs Procedures, Dispute Settlement, and the crucial area of Critical Minerals.

Ms. Teresa Stella Mera Gómez, the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Peru, and H.E. Mr. César Augusto Llona Silva, the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade. The Indian delegation was led by Shri Vimal Anand, Joint Secretary and Chief Negotiator, along with H.E. Shri Vishvas Vidu Sapkal, Ambassador of India to Peru.
Minister Gómez reaffirmed Peru’s commitment to a timely conclusion. She emphasized the complementarity between the two economies and expressed optimism that the agreement would significantly boost trade and investment. Ambassador Sapkal underscored India’s sustained growth and noted that the pact would open new opportunities for collaboration in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles, food processing, and critical minerals.
Both nations have agreed to hold meetings to resolve any remaining issues before the next round of negotiations, which is set for January 2026 in New Delhi.

Before the Lima talks, the 3rd Round of India-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations took place in Santiago, Chile, from October 27th to 30th, 2025.
Discussions covered a range of topics, including Investment Promotion, Intellectual Property Rights, Economic Cooperation, and the important areas of Trade in Goods and Services and Critical Minerals. Both sides expressed their commitment to achieving an early and timely conclusion of the CEPA, which aims to improve market access, strengthen supply chain resilience, and deepen overall economic integration.
India's strong pursuit of these economic frameworks with Peru and Chile shows a strategic focus on building stronger, mutually beneficial partnerships in Latin America. This effort helps establish a growing presence in the hemisphere's trade landscape.
