Iran Reopens Airspace After Five-Hour Shutdown Amid Rising Tensions with the US

New Delhi / Tehran: Iran reopened its airspace after a closure that lasted nearly five hours on Wednesday as tensions escalated between Tehran and Washington following protests and growing geopolitical pressure.

Authorities had initially announced that the airspace would remain shut until 7:30 pm (ET) but later extended the closure to 10:30 pm. The temporary suspension disrupted flight operations for several international carriers and created uncertainty across regional air routes.

According to real-time aviation data, the airspace is now operational with limited domestic flights by Iranian airlines including Mahan Air, Yazd Airways and AVA Airlines, serving destinations within the country.

Aviation officials earlier issued a flight advisory stating that all flights were restricted except for international civil arrivals and departures into Iranian-controlled airspace with special clearance from aviation authorities.

Major airlines had warned passengers of potential delays and cancellations. India’s largest carrier IndiGo and Germany-based Lufthansa were among those that adjusted their operations in response to the shutdown.

Geopolitical Pressure Mounts

The airspace disruption came amid increasing political friction after former US President Donald Trump warned that any country continuing trade with Iran could face an additional 25% tariff on all US trade.

The warning followed reports of widespread protests in Iran and an intensified government crackdown, with claims of multiple civilian deaths and mass arrests. Iranian authorities have acknowledged fatalities among security forces during the unrest.

Large pro-government rallies were also reported in Tehran in support of the current leadership.

Senior American political figures have renewed calls for a tougher stance on Tehran, urging stronger pressure on the regime and support for opposition movements.

Oil Prices Rise on Supply Fears

Energy markets reacted sharply to the growing uncertainty. US benchmark crude prices climbed for the sixth consecutive session, reaching around $62 per barrel, driven by concerns over possible supply disruptions and the risk of broader regional instability.

Analysts say continued tensions between Iran and the United States could have long-term implications for global energy markets, aviation routes and regional security.
