Geneva/Kyiv: Envoys from the United States and Ukraine drafted a new 19-point peace plan after extensive negotiations that wrapped up on Monday in Geneva. While the talks brought the two sides closer to a formal agreement, officials mentioned that several contentious issues still need to be resolved through more high-level discussions.

The preliminary agreement is a significant step forward, especially since it simplifies the initial proposal. Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, pointed out the progress, saying that "very few things are left" from the original 28-point plan offered by the US.

High-Stakes Talks Ahead
The main disagreements now will be handled directly by the leaders. US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to meet later this week to address the sensitive issues blocking a final deal.

The primary sticking point remains territorial talks. Ukraine is firmly opposing demands reportedly made by Russia to give up control of parts of the Donbas region that are not currently occupied by Moscow’s forces.

Beyond the immediate territorial disputes, future discussions will also look at the broader geopolitical situation. This includes the future relationships and security arrangements among NATO, Russia, and the United States.

Kremlin Rejects European Proposal
In another development that underscores the complexity of the current diplomatic situation, the Kremlin quickly dismissed a 27-point European counter-proposal introduced earlier on Monday. Moscow rejected the draft outright, calling it "completely unconstructive and does not work for us." This strong rebuke highlights ongoing tensions.
