GRSE Signs MoU with Kalyani Strategic Systems to Boost Indigenous Naval Tech

Kolkata, 5 March 2026: Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) to collaboratively develop and promote indigenous solutions for advanced naval systems, unmanned platforms, and other strategic maritime capabilities.

The MoU, signed on 5 March 2026, aims to combine GRSE’s extensive shipbuilding and maritime engineering expertise with KSSL’s capabilities as a leading defence OEM. Together, the partnership will explore solutions for naval and commercial vessels, including ship propulsion and mechanical systems, integrated platform management systems, steering and stabilizer assemblies, deck equipment, as well as Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs).

The collaboration is designed to serve both domestic and international markets, promoting self-reliance in India’s maritime defence sector and strengthening the nation’s strategic capabilities.

The MoU was signed by Cdr Shantanu Bose, Director (Shipbuilding) at GRSE, and Cmde Ajay Sharma, Vice President, Marine Systems at Bharat Forge Ltd, in the presence of GRSE’s CMD Cmde PR Hari (Retd.) and other senior officials, along with Shri Baba Kalyani, CMD of Bharat Forge Ltd.

About GRSE

Established in 1884 and taken over by the Government of India in 1960, GRSE is India’s first shipyard to build warships for the Indian Navy, including the Seaward Defence Boat INS Ajay in 1961. Over the years, GRSE has delivered over 800 platforms, including 115 warships for the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and friendly foreign nations.

GRSE operates four distinct shipyards, giving it a unique infrastructure advantage, and has diversified into engineering products such as pre-fabricated steel bridges, deck machinery, marine diesel engines, and 30mm naval guns.

Notable achievements include:

  • Defence Minister’s Award 2025 for Excellence in Financial Performance

  • Defence Minister’s Award 2022 for designing the most silent ship for ASW operations

  • Best Performing Defence Shipyard of India for four consecutive years

The company emphasizes in-house design capabilities, supported by highly skilled engineers, a Next Generation VR Lab, and modern software tools, allowing concurrent construction of up to 28 ships at a time.

 

Strategic Importance

This collaboration with KSSL reinforces India’s “Atmanirbharta” initiative in defence technology, promoting indigenisation, technological innovation, and global competitiveness in naval and maritime systems.
