NTPC Green Energy & Assago to Set Up 1000 TPD Green Urea Plant
NEW DELHI: In a landmark move for India’s sustainable agriculture and green chemistry sectors, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a subsidiary of power giant NTPC Limited, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Assago Industries Private Limited.
The agreement, signed at NTPC Bhawan, outlines a strategic collaboration to produce Green Urea at a massive scale. NGEL will supply critical sustainable inputs—including Green Ammonia, captured Carbon Dioxide (CO2), and Renewable Energy (RE) power—to fuel Assago’s upcoming production facility.
Key Project Highlights: Decarbonizing Agriculture
The proposed plant is designed to produce 1,000 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) of Green Urea, significantly reducing the carbon footprint of traditional fertilizer production.
-
Location: The plant is slated to be established within the NGEL Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka (near Visakhapatnam), Andhra Pradesh.
-
The "Green" Advantage: Unlike conventional urea, which relies on natural gas (fossil fuels), this project utilizes Green Ammonia and renewable power, aligning with India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.
-
Integrated Utilities: Beyond power and ammonia, the MoU covers the supply of various related utilities required to maintain a seamless, eco-friendly manufacturing cycle.
Why This Matters for Investors and the Environment
This partnership marks a pivotal step in developing a circular green economy. By utilizing captured CO2 and Green Ammonia, the project tackles two major industrial challenges: carbon emissions and the high cost of imported fertilizers.
-
Industrial Synergy: NGEL’s Pudimadaka Hub is evolving into a world-class ecosystem for green derivatives, offering a "plug-and-play" infrastructure for industrial giants.
-
Aatmanirbhar Bharat: Localized production of Green Urea reduces dependence on international supply chains and price volatility in the fertilizer market.
-
Climate Leadership: This project positions NTPC and Assago at the forefront of the global energy transition, proving that heavy industry can successfully decarbonize.
