New Delhi, March 14, 2026: In a significant development for India’s public sector steel industry, the Government of India has recommended Shri MNVS Prabhakar, currently Executive Director at NMDC Steel Limited, for the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity operating the Vizag Steel Plant.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) convened by the Ministry of Steel (India) at 09:00 AM on March 14, 2026 (Saturday) in New Delhi. The committee interviewed five senior executives from leading public sector steel organizations before finalizing its recommendation.

Candidates Interviewed for the Top Post

According to the official meeting minutes, the SCSC interviewed the following candidates:

  • Shri MNVS Prabhakar – Executive Director, NMDC Steel Limited

  • Shri S. Subbaraj – Executive Director, Alloy Steels Plant (ASP), Steel Authority of India Limited

  • Shri Bipin Kumar Giri – Executive Director (Mines Development), Steel Authority of India Limited

  • Shri Munna Prasad Singh – Executive Director (Mines), OGOM, CMLO, Steel Authority of India Limited

  • Shri Rakesh Kumar – Executive Director (Works), Bhilai Steel Plant, Steel Authority of India Limited

After evaluating the candidates’ leadership experience, operational track record, and strategic vision for the company, the committee recommended MNVS Prabhakar for appointment as CMD of RINL.

Strategic Timing for RINL

The appointment comes at a crucial time for Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, which has been working to strengthen financial performance and expand production capacity at the Vizag Steel Plant. Industry observers believe that leadership stability will be essential for the company as it navigates modernization plans, raw material security, and increased competition in India’s steel sector.

Prabhakar brings extensive experience in steel operations and project management from his tenure at NMDC Steel Limited, where he has been associated with large-scale steel production and infrastructure initiatives.

The SCSC recommendation will now move forward for approval through the government’s appointment process. Once cleared by the relevant authorities, Prabhakar is expected to take charge as CMD of RINL, overseeing one of India’s major public sector steel producers.
