Theres no intention of privatising railways
NEW DELHI . In a wide-ranging interview to Financial Chronicle, railway minister Suresh Prabhu talks about profits, monetisation and the fact that there will be no Rail Budget for the first time in 92 . Prabhu countered vehemently saying, “A number of non-core activities are at present being outsourced by railways. On-board houseke¬e¬ping, catering, cleanliness at stations, etc, have been outsourced for years.
From the point of view of efficiency of service delivery, if required, further outsourcing can be considered. I would like to make it clear that there is no intention of privatising railways. We also use the PPP route to boost investment in railway infrastructure. I want to reiterate there is no such intention of privatising railways. It is one of the government’s prized jewels hence the question of privatisation does not arise.’’
