Indian LNG import terminal, owned by the state-run Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), has received its first shipment of super-chilled liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to HPCL officials.

The terminal is currently commissioning, and the cargo is expected to be fully unloaded by January 16. HPCL plans to officially launch its new LNG import terminal in December or January and is in discussions with potential long-term LNG suppliers.

The company aimed to receive cargo to commence operations at the new facility, located in Gujarat State on India’s west coast, in December or January; however, it missed this opportunity in April 2024 due to adverse weather conditions.

According to last year's report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), India's industrial expansion and increasing oil refining to meet rising fuel demand are projected to triple the country’s natural gas consumption by 2050.

As the world’s third-largest crude oil importer, India is also expected to become a significant player in the natural gas market. Demand continues to grow in the coming decades, driven by industrial and population expansion.
