Mumbai: M Ilankumaran has officially assumed charge as the Command Medical Officer (CMO) at Southern Naval Command (HQSNC) on May 19, 2026.

He succeeds Samir Kapoor in the prestigious appointment.

 

Distinguished Career in the Indian Navy

An alumnus of Madurai Medical College, Surgeon Rear Admiral M Ilankumaran was commissioned into the Indian Navy on June 30, 1993.

Over a career spanning nearly three decades, the Flag Officer has held several important operational and administrative appointments within the naval medical services.

His notable assignments include:

  • Commanding INHS Patanjali

  • Serving in key staff appointments at the Western Naval Command (WNC)

  • Holding responsibilities at Naval Headquarters (NHQ)

 

 

Expert in Community Medicine and Public Health

Surgeon Rear Admiral Ilankumaran is widely recognized as a specialist in Community Medicine, bringing extensive expertise in:

  • Public health management

  • Medical administration

  • Preventive healthcare systems

  • Military healthcare planning

Prior to taking over as Command Medical Officer at HQSNC, he served as Executive Officer of INHS Ashvini, one of the premier naval medical establishments in India.

His appointment comes as the Indian Navy continues to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and medical preparedness across commands. With vast experience in naval healthcare administration and community medicine, Surgeon Rear Admiral Ilankumaran is expected to play a significant role in enhancing medical support systems and operational healthcare capabilities within the Southern Naval Command.
