Suzlon Energy Limited has secured its first-ever wind power order from the ArcelorMittal Group, marking a major milestone in India’s green steel transition. The company has won a 248.5 MW wind energy project through ArcelorMittal’s renewable energy arm in India.
The project will be executed in Bachau, Gujarat, and forms part of a larger 550 MW hybrid renewable energy project developed for the captive power requirements of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel’s Indian operations.
Project Details and Execution
Under the order, Suzlon will supply and install 79 S144 wind turbine generators, each with a rated capacity of 3.15 MW. The turbines will support clean energy sourcing for steel manufacturing, one of the most energy-intensive industrial sectors.
Suzlon remains the largest wind energy player in Gujarat, with an installed capacity base of 4.5 GW, further strengthening its leadership in the state through this project.
Strengthening India’s Green Steel Capacity
This order marks Suzlon’s fourth major wind energy project dedicated to decarbonising steel production within a year. With this addition, Suzlon is now enabling nearly 1,156 MW of renewable energy capacity for green steel manufacturing across India.
Over the past year, the company has partnered with multiple steel producers to accelerate the shift towards low-carbon and sustainable steel production.
Leadership Commentary
Suzlon Vice Chairman Girish Tanti said the partnership highlights the growing role of renewable energy in industrial decarbonisation. He noted that as steel producers move towards sustainability, clean energy solutions are becoming both economically viable and strategically essential.
Suzlon Group CEO JP Chalasani stated that the project aligns with the company’s focus on expanding its EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) portfolio, which is expected to account for a larger share of future order inflows.
From ArcelorMittal’s side, Amit Harlalka, Director of ArcelorMittal Sustainable Solutions India, said the company is committed to securing reliable clean energy for its operations and views Suzlon as a trusted long-term partner in achieving its sustainability goals.
