BHEL Board Approves Short Closure of Proposed Varanasi Plant Project; Production to be Shifted to Other Units

New Delhi: In a significant strategic update, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), a Maharatna CPSE under the Government of India, has announced the short closure of its previously approved capital investment scheme for setting up a new manufacturing plant in Karkhiyaon, Varanasi.

The decision was taken by the company's Board of Directors during a meeting held today, January 19, 2026, which commenced at 10:50 AM and concluded at 11:28 AM. The Board cited the "current business landscape" as the primary reason for the move.

Key Details of the Announcement:

  • Project: The proposed new BHEL plant at Karkhiyaon, Varanasi.

  • Original Approval: The capital investment scheme for this plant was initially approved and intimated to the stock exchanges on January 23, 2024, in compliance with SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements (LODR) Regulations, 2015.

  • Latest Decision: The Board has now approved the "short closure" of this scheme, effectively putting a stop to the plan for the Varanasi-based greenfield project.

  • Strategic Shift: The products that were originally slated to be manufactured at the Varanasi plant will now be produced at other existing BHEL manufacturing locations across the country. The specific locations were not disclosed in the regulatory filing.

Compliance & Communication:

The intimation regarding this decision has been formally submitted to the BSE Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited, pursuant to Regulation 30 of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015. The communication was issued by Dr. Yogesh R Chhabra, Company Secretary of BHEL.

Implications:

This decision indicates a strategic realignment by BHEL in response to evolving market conditions and operational efficiencies. By consolidating production of the planned product lines into its existing facilities, the company likely aims to optimize capital expenditure and utilize current capacities more effectively.

The earlier announcement of the Varanasi plant had been seen as a part of BHEL's expansion and modernization plans. The reversal of this plan underscores the dynamic nature of strategic planning in large capital-intensive industries, where boards must remain agile to changing economic and business environments.
