CMPDI Starts G-4 Copper Survey in Jiawan Block, Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh
New Delhi: Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) has commenced a G-4 level reconnaissance survey for copper in the Jiawan Block of Singrauli district, Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step in the company's strategic expansion into non-coal mineral exploration.
The survey officially began on June 17, 2026, and reflects CMPDI's increasing emphasis on critical minerals while continuing to fulfill its core coal exploration responsibilities.
NMEDT Approves Copper Exploration Project
The reconnaissance survey for copper has been approved by the National Mineral Exploration and Development Trust (NMEDT) under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The approval was granted through a sanction order dated March 23, 2026.
The initiative aligns with the country's broader strategy to secure critical mineral resources and reduce dependence on imports.
Survey to Include Geological Mapping and Drilling
According to CMPDI, the G-4 reconnaissance survey framework includes several stages aimed at assessing the copper potential of the block. These include:
-
Geological mapping
-
Systematic sampling and trenching
-
Laboratory analysis
-
Drilling activities
The survey is expected to generate preliminary data that could pave the way for advanced stages of mineral exploration.
Expansion into Critical Minerals Gains Momentum
The latest development comes days after CMPDI launched a G-4 level reconnaissance survey for graphite in the Gokhra Block (Cluster-16) in Odisha's Kalahandi district on June 8, 2026.
These initiatives underscore CMPDI's commitment to diversifying its exploration portfolio beyond coal and strengthening India's critical mineral ecosystem.
Supporting India's Mineral Security Goals
With increasing demand for strategic minerals such as copper and graphite, CMPDI's exploration efforts are expected to support the Government of India's objective of enhancing domestic mineral availability and reducing reliance on imports.
The projects also highlight the organization's technical capabilities and its growing role in advancing the country's resource security and self-reliance agenda.
