Coal India August 2026: Production Falls 5.7%, Offtake Climbs 5.5%

Kolkata: Coal India Limited (CIL) reported a mixed operational performance in August 2026. The company’s provisional coal production fell 5.7% year-on-year to 47.5 million tonnes (MT), while offtake rose 5.5% to 60.6 MT.

The figures were disclosed to the stock exchanges on September 1, 2026.

Production Declines in August

Coal India produced 47.5 MT in August 2026, compared with 50.4 MT in August 2025.

Production growth was strong at Eastern Coalfields (39.5%), Central Coalfields (19.5%) and Western Coalfields (24.7%).

However, output declined at key subsidiaries including Northern Coalfields (-24.8%), Mahanadi Coalfields (-10%) and South Eastern Coalfields (-10.2%).

Offtake Rises 5.5%

Coal offtake moved in the opposite direction, increasing to 60.6 MT from 57.4 MT a year earlier.

Western Coalfields recorded the highest growth among major subsidiaries at 47.3%, followed by Eastern Coalfields at 45.3% and Central Coalfields at 28.1%.

Northern Coalfields' offtake declined 23.7% during the month.

April-August Numbers

For April-August 2026, Coal India's cumulative production stood at 267.5 MT, down 4.5% from 280.2 MT in the same period last year.

Cumulative offtake, however, rose 6.7% to 322.9 MT, compared with 302.6 MT a year earlier.

This means offtake remained stronger than production growth during the first five months of FY27, despite the decline in cumulative output.
