Delhi Metro Records 235.8 Crore Passenger Journeys in 2025
New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a significant milestone by recording 235.8 crore passenger journeys in 2025, reaffirming its status as the lifeline of Delhi-NCR and the backbone of India’s urban mass transit network.
The achievement comes as the Delhi Metro network continues to expand, with two new sections inaugurated recently on the Pink Line and Magenta Line, further strengthening connectivity across the National Capital Region.
Delhi Metro Drives India’s Expanding Metro Ecosystem
With the latest expansion, India now operates the third-largest metro rail network in the world, with more than 1,143 kilometres of operational metro lines across 26 cities. Metro systems across the country together facilitate nearly 1.15 crore passenger journeys every day.
Among them, the Delhi Metro alone accounts for over 55% of daily metro ridership, highlighting its dominant role in India’s urban transportation system.
Out of the total operational metro network in the country, the Delhi-NCR region accounts for approximately 416 kilometres with 303 stations. This includes:
-
Noida–Greater Noida Metro: around 29 km with 21 stations
-
Rapid Metro Gurugram: around 13 km with 12 stations
These networks connect Delhi seamlessly with key NCR cities such as Noida, Greater Noida, and Gurugram, making regional commuting faster and more efficient.
Massive Daily Operations Across the Network
The Delhi Metro currently operates 343 trains comprising 2,368 coaches, running approximately 4,508 train trips every day.
These operations cover nearly 1,40,112 train kilometres daily, ensuring frequent and reliable services throughout the network. The system also maintains an exceptional punctuality rate of about 99.9%, placing it among the most reliable metro systems in the world.
Passenger Growth After Pandemic Years
Delhi Metro has witnessed steady growth in ridership after the COVID-19 pandemic, which had significantly impacted public transport usage during 2020–2022.
Passenger statistics for the last two years highlight the strong recovery:
2024
-
2,283.5 million passenger journeys (around 223.5 crore)
-
Average daily ridership: 62.39 lakh passengers
2025
-
2,358.03 million passenger journeys (around 235.8 crore)
-
Average daily ridership: 64.60 lakh passengers
The data indicates increasing reliance on the metro network for daily commuting in the capital region.
Record-Breaking Daily Ridership
The Delhi Metro has also broken its highest-ever daily ridership records multiple times in recent years.
-
18 November 2024: 78,67,649 passengers travelled in a single day.
-
8 August 2025: The network achieved its highest-ever ridership, with 81,87,674 passenger journeys in a single day.
These milestones underline the growing popularity and efficiency of the metro system.
One of the World’s Largest Driverless Metro Networks
Delhi Metro is also home to India’s largest driverless metro network, which ranks among the largest globally.
Driverless operations are currently available on:
-
Pink Line: 71.55 km from Majlis Park to Maujpur-Babarpur, including Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar
-
Magenta Line: 49.19 km from Krishna Park Extension to Botanical Garden and Deepali Chowk to Majlis Park
At present, 80 driverless trains operate on these two lines, reflecting DMRC’s commitment to advanced automation and globally benchmarked metro technologies.
Expansion Under Phase-IV
To further strengthen urban mobility in the capital, Phase-IV priority corridors of the Delhi Metro are currently under construction.
As part of future expansion plans, 52 new metro trains are being procured in phases, out of which 18 trains have already been delivered.
These additions are expected to enhance service frequency and accommodate rising passenger demand in the coming years.
Transforming Urban Mobility in Delhi-NCR
Over the years, the Delhi Metro has transformed public transportation in the region by:
-
Reducing travel time across the city
-
Easing traffic congestion on roads
-
Promoting environmentally sustainable transport
With its vast network, advanced technology, and high operational efficiency, the Delhi Metro continues to set benchmarks for urban rail systems not only in India but also globally.
