Madurai Airport Declared International; Tuticorin Renamed Thoothukudi Airport
Tamil Nadu, March 2026: In a landmark move for Tamil Nadu’s aviation sector, Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Sh. Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the International status of Madurai Airport and inaugurated the new ATC Tower-cum-Technical Block. During the event, Tuticorin Airport was officially renamed Thoothukudi Airport, signaling a major step toward stronger regional air connectivity.
With its new international designation, Madurai Airport is poised to enhance global connectivity, tourism, and trade across Southern Tamil Nadu. The upgraded ATC Tower-cum-Technical Block, constructed at a cost of ₹94.37 crore, will further strengthen operational efficiency and aviation safety.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Dr. L. Murugan, Union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs; Sh. Vipin Kumar, Chairman of Airports Authority of India (AAI); and Smt. Rubina Ali, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.
The initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing Tamil Nadu’s aviation infrastructure, promoting regional economic growth, and expanding international air travel options from Southern India.
