IGL Director Highlights Methane Reduction Strategies at EDF–PNGRB Panel Discussion
New Delhi, June 11, 2026: Mr. Mohit Bhatia, Director (Commercial) of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), participated as a panelist in a high-level discussion on “Pathways for Advancing Methane Emissions Reduction Across India’s Oil and Gas Sector”, organized by the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) in association with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).
The session brought together industry leaders and policymakers to discuss actionable strategies for reducing methane emissions across India’s oil and gas value chain.
CGD Sector’s Role in Clean Energy Transition
Speaking at the panel, Mr. Bhatia emphasized the critical role of the City Gas Distribution (CGD) sector in supporting India’s clean energy transition and decarbonization goals.
He highlighted that CGD networks are central to expanding cleaner fuel access while improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
Focus on Technology-Driven Methane Mitigation
Mr. Bhatia underlined the importance of adopting advanced technologies for effective emissions control, including:
-
Advanced leak detection systems
-
Predictive maintenance solutions
-
Digital asset management tools
-
End-to-end methane mitigation across asset lifecycle
He stressed that technology integration is key to improving operational efficiency while ensuring environmental compliance and safety.
Compressed Biogas Integration as a Decarbonization Driver
A key highlight of his address was the growing role of Compressed Biogas (CBG) in CGD infrastructure.
He noted that integrating CBG into gas distribution networks is a significant step toward:
- Decarbonization of the energy mix
- Promotion of a circular economy
- Reduction in dependence on fossil fuels
- Strengthening domestic energy sustainability
Methane Reduction Linked to Energy Security and Safety
Mr. Bhatia emphasized that reducing methane emissions is not only an environmental priority but also essential for:
- Energy security
- Operational efficiency
- Public safety
- Long-term sustainability of the gas sector
He reiterated that coordinated industry action is required to achieve measurable emissions reductions across the sector.
Industry Collaboration for Sustainable Growth
The EDF–PNGRB discussion highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between regulators, industry stakeholders, and technology providers to accelerate methane mitigation efforts in India’s oil and gas sector.
