NTPC Upcoming Projects 2026: Thermal, Renewable & Hydro Capacity Expansion Plans
New Delhi: NTPC Limited, India's largest power utility, continues its aggressive expansion to meet the country's growing energy demand while transitioning towards a greener portfolio. As of May 2026, the NTPC Group has crossed 90 GW of installed capacity and is targeting 149 GW by 2032, with a significant focus on renewables (60 GW target) alongside thermal and hydro additions.
NTPC Capacity Addition in FY 2025-26
NTPC recorded its highest-ever annual capacity addition of approximately 9.6 GW in FY 2025-26 (April 2025–March 2026), including around 5.5 GW of green energy (solar, wind, and pumped storage). This has strengthened India's energy security with a balanced mix of conventional and renewable sources.
The company has substantial projects under construction (~18 GW thermal + hydro and ~14.5 GW renewable) that are expected to contribute to commissioning timelines in 2026 and beyond.
Key Thermal & Hydro Projects Under Construction (Likely Commissioning Phases in 2026+)
These supercritical/ultra-supercritical projects will add reliable baseload power:
-
Darlipali-II (Odisha, NTPC Owned): 800 MW Thermal
-
Gadarwara-II (Madhya Pradesh): 1,600 MW Thermal
-
Lara-II (Chhattisgarh): 1,600 MW Thermal
-
NabiNagar-II (Bihar): 2,400 MW Thermal
-
Singrauli-III (Uttar Pradesh): 1,600 MW Thermal
-
Talcher-III (Odisha): 1,320 MW Thermal
-
Telangana Stage II: 2,400 MW Thermal
-
Patratu (Jharkhand, JV): Multiple units (recent Unit 2 of 800 MW contributed to crossing 90 GW milestone)
-
Hydro projects like Tapovan Vishnugud (520 MW), Pipalkoti (444 MW), and others in Uttarakhand and Arunachal Pradesh.
Projects Under Planning (Thermal expansions): Lara-III (1,600 MW), TTPP-IV (800 MW), Barauni-III (800 MW), and others totaling ~5,600 MW.
Renewable Energy Focus: Major Push in 2026
NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) and group companies are rapidly scaling renewables. Key areas include large solar parks (e.g., Khavda in Gujarat), wind projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and floating solar initiatives.
Many renewable projects under construction (e.g., blocks in Bikaner, Khavda phases, Dayapar, etc.) are slated for progressive commissioning in 2026. NTPC aims for strong additions in FY26-27 through utility-scale solar, wind, and hybrid projects.
Long-term Goals by 2032:
-
Total Capacity: 149 GW
-
Renewables: 60 GW (~40% mix)
-
Thermal: Balanced addition for energy security
-
Additional focus on Pumped Storage Projects (PSP), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Green Hydrogen, and Nuclear.
Why NTPC Projects Matter
These upcoming projects support India's target of reliable 24x7 power, economic growth, and net-zero ambitions. NTPC's emphasis on supercritical technology improves efficiency and reduces emissions, while renewables accelerate the clean energy transition.
