New Delhi: Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (PVUNL), a subsidiary of NTPC Limited in joint venture with Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL), has achieved a major milestone with the successful trial operation of Unit-2 (800 MW) of the Patratu Super Thermal Power Project on May 11, 2026. With this development, PVUNL’s installed capacity has reached 1,600 MW, contributing to the NTPC Group crossing the landmark 90+ GW total installed capacity milestone.

Ashok Kumar Sehgal, CEO of PVUNL, stated that the commissioning of Unit-2 marks a transformational step for Jharkhand’s energy landscape. Approximately 85% of the generated power has been allocated to the state, strengthening energy security and supporting industrial and economic growth in the region.

The milestone follows the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) of Unit-1 on November 5, 2025, and the achievement of full load by Unit-2 in March 2026. During FY 2025-26, PVUNL generated 2,062.90 million units (MUs) of electricity. Work on Unit-3 is progressing at full pace and is targeted for commissioning in FY 2026-27.

The project is based on advanced Ultra Supercritical (USC) technology, incorporates an Air-Cooled Condenser (ACC) system, and features a 100% dry ash handling system, reflecting PVUNL’s focus on sustainable thermal power generation. The company also continues to emphasize skill development and workforce capability building to support future-ready operations.

PVUNL and NTPC reiterated their commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable power while contributing to the growth of India’s power sector, acknowledging the support of stakeholders including the Government of Jharkhand, the Central Electricity Authority, the Ministry of Power, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), and project partners.
