New Delhi: TERI and the GRIHA Council hosted a National Stakeholder Consultation on “Scaling BIPV Integration in India: Challenges & Opportunities” at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi on 21 January, 2026.   Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) represents the next frontier in urban sustainability—where solar generation is seamlessly integrated into facades, glazing, and shading devices, eliminating the need for additional land.
Mr Sanjay Seth, Vice President & CEO, GRIHA Council, and Senior Director, TERI, stated at the event, “The building envelope must be treated as a serious energy surface. While technology and cost are no longer the main barriers, the real challenge lies in integration, delivery, and regulation. We need a clear, predictable approval and procurement framework to make BIPV bankable and scalable.”
“BIPV standardization faces unique challenges related to structural integrity, safety, and durability. Collaboration is key; BIS has constituted the ETD 28 Committee to ensure clear quality benchmarks for solar PV systems,” shared Ms Reena Garg, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
Prof Deo Prasad AO FTSE, CEO, NSW Decarbonisation Innovation Hub, added, “Global examples show how strong policy support and large-scale demonstrations accelerate adoption. Smart incentives and demand-side generation are proving crucial for building resilient, future-ready energy systems.”

The stakeholder discussion focused on key enablers and barriers to large-scale BIPV adoption, including integration with national building codes and municipal by-laws, alignment with flagship programmes such as PM Surya Ghar Yojana, economic viability and financing frameworks, lifecycle cost-benefit analysis, capacity building, and technical skill development. A technology presentation on façade-integrated BIPV was also delivered by Mr Prateek Jain, Founder & CEO, FutrBuilds .
The consultation brought together a diverse ecosystem—including Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India , Bureau of Indian Standards , Bureau of Energy Efficiency - ऊर्जा दक्षता ब्यूरो , International Solar Alliance, World Bank , and Invest India—with a clear mission: to bridge the gap between policy and practice, and to advance material innovation.
