Indian Railways Targets Renewal of Over 7,900 Km of Tracks in Two Years
New Delhi: In a major infrastructure push, Indian Railways has announced plans to renew over 7,900 kilometers of tracks over the next two years. This initiative aims to enhance safety, speed, and the overall reliability of the national rail network.
According to the Ministry of Railways, a massive renewal work for over 7,500 km is currently underway in the current financial year (FY26). This follows the completion of approximately 6,800 km of track renewal in the previous financial year (FY25).
Focus on High-Speed Capable Network
The Ministry highlighted that sustained investment over the past decade has significantly strengthened track infrastructure. A key outcome is the expansion of the high-speed capable network.
-
The length of tracks capable of supporting speeds of 110 kmph or more has nearly doubled since 2014.
-
This enhanced infrastructure now enables higher-speed train operations across around 80% of the Broad Gauge network of Indian Railways.
This large-scale renewal and upgrade program is critical for supporting the introduction and smooth operation of newer, faster trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat expresses, while simultaneously improving safety standards and passenger comfort.
