Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 130m Steel Span Successfully Launched Over Railway Tracks in Gujarat
Gujarat, May 20, 2026: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has achieved a significant engineering milestone in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project with the successful launch of a massive 130-metre steel bridge span over active Indian railway and Dedicated Freight Corridor tracks near Tralsi village in Bharuch district, Gujarat.
This launch on 16th May 2026 brings the total completed length of this three-span steel bridge to 230 metres out of its total 330 metres.
Bridge Specifications and Engineering Feat
The steel bridge is a three-span structure comprising:
-
100m + 130m continuous span
-
100m simply supported span
Key details of the launched 130m span:
-
Weight: Approximately 2,900 metric tonnes
-
Height: ~18 metres
-
Width: 15.5 metres
-
Construction: Assembled using 1,21,373 Tor-Shear Type High Strength (TTHS) bolts, C5 system painting, and metallic bearings
The span was fabricated at the Karbon Factory in Umergaon, Gujarat, assembled on temporary trestles at a height of 14 metres above ground, and launched using an advanced automatic mechanism powered by two semi-automatic jacks, each delivering 250 tonnes of pushing force with MacAlloy bars.
The 100m simply supported span (1,500 MT) was already erected in-situ in March 2026. The remaining 100m continuous span (approx. 1,600 MT) will also be erected in-situ. Upon completion, the entire bridge will weigh around 6,100 metric tonnes and is designed for a 100-year lifespan.
Strategic Location and Execution
The bridge crosses the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFCC) tracks in the Surat-Vadodara section. The launching was executed with meticulously coordinated traffic blocks on the freight corridor to ensure zero disruption to freight movement while maintaining highest safety standards.
Progress on Steel Bridges in Gujarat
This achievement adds to the impressive progress of the project in Gujarat:
-
14 out of 17 planned steel bridges in Gujarat are now completed.
-
A total of 28 steel bridges are planned across the entire Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.
India’s High-Speed Rail Milestone
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project continues to demonstrate world-class engineering capabilities with complex bridge launches over live railway corridors. This latest success highlights the rapid advancement of India’s first high-speed rail network, set to transform connectivity between Maharashtra and Gujarat.
