India Becomes First Country to Commercially Produce Bio-Bitumen from Agro-Waste
New Delhi: Today, India has reached a historic milestone in road infrastructure by becoming the first country in the world to commercially produce bio-bitumen.
The breakthrough, titled “From Farm Residue to Road: Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis,” was made possible by the dedicated scientists of CSIR, with continuous support from Union MoS Shri Dr. Jitendra Singh. The innovation demonstrates how agricultural waste can be transformed into a valuable national resource.
Bio-bitumen represents a transformative step towards #ViksitBharat2047, promoting sustainability by utilizing agro-waste to reduce pollution from crop burning and strengthen the circular economy. With 15% blending, India could save nearly ₹4,500 crore in foreign exchange and reduce dependence on imported crude oil.
Beyond economic benefits, the initiative will empower farmers, create rural livelihood opportunities, and boost the rural economy, reflecting the government’s commitment to self-reliance, environmentally responsible growth, and a cleaner, greener future.
