Maharashtra Signs ₹10,217 Crore MoU for 2100 MW Pumped Storage Project in Pune & Raigad
Pune, March 5: In a major push toward clean energy and sustainable power infrastructure, the Government of Maharashtra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth ₹10,217 crore for the development of a 2100 MW pumped storage project. The agreement was signed between the Water Resource Department of Maharashtra and Chambery Power Private Limited, a group company of EDF Power Solutions India Pvt. Ltd..
The MoU signing ceremony was presided over by Devendra Fadnavis, marking another significant milestone in the state’s strategy to strengthen renewable energy capacity and energy storage infrastructure.
Project Overview
The proposed Pimpalpada–Savale Pumped Storage Project will be developed across the districts of Pune and Raigad. Pumped storage projects play a crucial role in balancing power supply by storing surplus electricity during low demand periods and releasing it during peak demand.
Key Highlights
-
Total Capacity: 2100 MW
-
Estimated Investment: ₹10,217 crore
-
Expected Employment: Around 2,500 jobs during development and operational phases
The project is expected to significantly enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the power system.
Maharashtra’s Growing Clean Energy Ambitions
With this project, the number of pumped storage projects initiated in Maharashtra has increased to 55, with a combined planned generation capacity of 78,215 MW. These projects are expected to attract an estimated ₹4.17 lakh crore in investments and generate employment opportunities for approximately 1.28 lakh people.
The expansion of pumped storage facilities forms an important part of Maharashtra’s long-term energy strategy, aimed at ensuring reliable power supply while transitioning toward cleaner energy sources.
Leaders Present at the Ceremony
Several key leaders and officials were present during the MoU signing event, including Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Girish Mahajan. The event was also attended by Guirec Servan, CEO of EDF Power Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., along with other senior representatives and government officials.
Strengthening India’s Energy Transition
Pumped storage projects are increasingly being recognized as a vital component of India’s clean energy transition. They act as large-scale energy storage systems that help manage fluctuations in renewable energy generation and maintain grid reliability.
The Pimpalpada–Savale project is expected to play a key role in supporting Maharashtra’s ambitious renewable energy goals while also boosting regional economic development through infrastructure investment and job creation.
