Mumbai: Bharat Forge Limited has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine (MGT) repair, overhaul and indigenous development facility at Visakhapatnam, marking a major milestone for defence self-reliance.

The MoU was signed during the Aerospace and Defence Investment Conclave at Puttaparthy in the presence of Rajnath Singh and N. Chandrababu Naidu. The project will be developed across approximately 80 acres within the Andhra Pradesh Defence Manufacturing Corridor.

The upcoming facility will be co-located with key naval infrastructure, including the Eastern Naval Command and INS Eksila, and will bring critical marine propulsion sustainment capabilities to India’s private sector for the first time. Phase 1 will establish a full Marine Gas Turbine repair and overhaul complex capable of hot section restoration, component manufacturing, non-destructive testing and a 72-hour turnaround capability for the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

In Phase 2, Bharat Forge will develop India’s first private-sector Marine Gas Turbine development and assembly hall, along with a full-spectrum hot test cell and indigenous marine gas turbine development capabilities. The facility is also expected to serve as a regional hub for friendly foreign navies and generate around 750 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

According to Amit Kalyani, the project marks a decisive step toward reducing dependence on overseas supply chains and strengthening India’s naval readiness. The initiative aligns with the nation’s push for defence indigenisation and the broader vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

The project underscores Andhra Pradesh’s growing role as a hub for aerospace and defence manufacturing and positions India to strengthen its domestic defence ecosystem and strategic capabilities.
