BHOPAL: India’s coal sector has achieved another milestone with the start of production at the Urtan and Dhirauli coal mines in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant boost to domestic coal supply and energy self-reliance. The development was announced by the Ministry of Coal as part of ongoing reforms to enhance efficiency and strengthen the nation’s energy security.

Coal production at the Urtan Coal Mine in Anuppur district began on 15 May 2026. The mine has been allocated to JMS Mining Private Limited and has made history as the first underground coal mine to start production under India’s commercial coal auction regime. This milestone reflects the success of policy reforms aimed at encouraging private sector participation in the coal industry.

In another key development, production commenced at the Dhirauli Coal Mine in the Singrauli district on 17 May 2026. The mine, allocated to Mahan Energen Limited, is expected to significantly strengthen coal output from the resource-rich Singrauli region, a major hub for thermal power generation.

The operationalisation of both mines highlights the impact of progressive policy measures introduced by the government to streamline approvals, improve operational efficiency and promote ease of doing business in the mining sector. These reforms are playing a crucial role in accelerating India’s push toward energy self-sufficiency.

With rising domestic demand for coal, the increased output from Urtan and Dhirauli mines is expected to reduce dependence on imports, support power generation, and contribute to sustained economic growth. The development represents a major step forward in India’s journey toward achieving self-reliance in the energy sector.
