₹993 Crore Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Rail Doubling Approved to Transform Chennai Suburban Network
New Delhi: The Indian Railways has approved the ₹993 crore Arakkonam–Chengalpattu Doubling Project, a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at strengthening the Chennai suburban rail network and improving passenger as well as freight connectivity in Tamil Nadu.
Announcing the project, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the 68-km doubling work will ease congestion on one of the busiest suburban corridors while enhancing punctuality, operational efficiency and overall rail capacity. The section forms a key part of the Chennai suburban circular rail network connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam.
Currently operating near full capacity, the single-line section has been facing increasing traffic pressure. The doubling project will reduce train detention time, allow higher frequency of suburban services and significantly improve reliability for daily commuters.
The upgraded corridor will also strengthen freight movement by enabling faster transportation of essential commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel. The route connects major industrial hubs including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai, making it critical for regional manufacturing and logistics growth.
The project gains additional importance due to the proposed Parandur Airport near Kancheepuram, which is expected to drive further passenger and cargo demand. Once completed, the doubling work will support industrial expansion, improve regional mobility and deliver safer, faster and more efficient rail services across the Chennai metropolitan region.
