SAIL’s IGH Rourkela Performs First Thoracotomy with One-Lung Ventilation for TB Spine

Rourkela, September 2026: Doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH), SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant, have successfully performed a thoracotomy with one-lung ventilation for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis, marking the first such procedure in Rourkela, according to a hospital post.

The procedure was performed on 34-year-old Vijay Sirka, a CSR-supported patient who was admitted to IGH on July 31, 2026, with sudden paralysis of both lower limbs.

An MRI showed D10–D11 Pott’s spine (spinal tuberculosis) with pus collection, requiring surgical intervention.

The complex surgery was performed by Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, with support from the Anaesthesia team and nursing staff.

The surgical approach required one-lung ventilation, a specialised anaesthesia technique used to provide access to the thoracic cavity during the procedure.

Patient Shows Early Recovery

Following surgery, the patient has developed flickering movements in both lower limbs, indicating early signs of neurological recovery, according to IGH.

He is continuing physiotherapy and post-operative care at the hospital.
