China has launched renovation projects at 25,100 old urban residential communities during the first ten months of 2025, exceeding the national target for the year, according to official data from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD).

A total of 16 provincial-level regions have already met their renovation targets this year, reflecting the country’s ongoing efforts to make cities more livable and sustainable.

From 2019 to 2024, China carried out renovation projects in approximately 280,000 old urban residential communities, benefiting more than 120 million people. During this period, the country also:

  • Renovated and upgraded 360,000 kilometers of aging pipelines

  • Created 3.87 million parking spaces

  • Built 78,000 community-based elderly care or child care service facilities

The initiatives are part of China’s broader urban renewal strategy, which aims to optimize urban structures, improve quality of life, promote green development, preserve cultural heritage, and enhance governance efficiency, as highlighted in the Central Urban Work Conference in July 2025.

These measures demonstrate China’s commitment to modernizing urban infrastructure while addressing the needs of residents in older communities.
